To customize based on your usage habits, turn off Background App Refresh by individual app via the menu beneath.
You can control whether or not your Android auto-updates apps in Google Play.
In addition to being a drain on your data plan, Background App Refresh can also have a negative impact on your phone’s battery life.
While the feature can be useful, it’s not likely that you need up-to-date information on each and every installed app on your phone.

Turn off Background App Refresh entirely by choosing Off – you also have the option to set it to refresh only while using Wi-Fi or while using Wi-Fi & Cellular Data. Now you’re in complete control of when your Android apps get updated. You can visit your list of installed apps on Google Play or open the Play Store app if you wish to manually update apps in the future.I didn’t initiate any of those updates so I guess it was automatic. The thing is the apps that were updated automatically couldn’t run smoothly.
